SAT Maths, taught domain by domain

The exam is written against four published content domains. So is this programme. Each one is taught, practised, tested and then re-tested against the student's own error log.

Curriculum

The four domains in full

Order is decided in the diagnostic lesson. Most students do not start with Domain 01.

Domain 01

Algebra

Most algebra marks are lost in the translation from sentence to equation — not in the algebra itself.

Skills covered

Linear equations in one or two variables

Systems of linear equations

Linear inequalities and regions

Interpreting slope and intercepts in context

Typical difficulties

Setting up the equation from a word problem

Sign errors when rearranging

Reading “per” and rate language incorrectly

How lessons address it

We practise translation drills: the same word problem is modelled three ways, then solved algebraically and checked graphically in Desmos so the student can see when an answer is impossible.

Domain 02

Advanced Math

Advanced Math rewards students who can read a function's shape before they start calculating.

Skills covered

Quadratic and polynomial equations

Equivalent forms: vertex, factored, standard

Exponential growth and decay

Function notation, transformations and zeros

Typical difficulties

Choosing the slowest solving method under time pressure

Extraneous solutions in radical equations

Confusing a transformation of x with one of y

How lessons address it

Each concept is taught through the form that makes the question easiest, then the student solves paired questions — one by algebra, one by graph — and compares which route was faster.

Domain 03

Problem-Solving and Data Analysis

This domain is less about calculation and more about reading a table honestly.

Ratios, rates, proportions and unit conversion

Percentages and percentage change

Mean, median, spread and outliers

Two-way tables, probability and scatterplots

Percentage change of a percentage

Mixing up sample and population conclusions

Misreading axis units and scale

How lessons address it

Lessons use short data sets where the student states the claim first and checks it second — the habit that removes most careless marks in this domain.

Domain 04

Geometry and Trigonometry

Geometry becomes fast when the diagram is drawn before the formula is recalled.

Angle relationships and triangle similarity

Right triangles, Pythagoras and SOH-CAH-TOA

Circles: arcs, sectors, equations

Area, surface area and volume

Typical difficulties

Not drawing or labelling the figure

Radians and degrees mixed in one question

Assuming a figure is to scale

How lessons address it

The student sketches and labels before touching the formula sheet, then we compare two constructions for the same problem to show which assumptions were safe.

The built-in graphing calculator can turn a three-minute algebra question into a twenty-second read — and can also waste time when it is the wrong tool.

Pacing

Time management under exam conditions

Knowing the mathematics is not the same as finishing the module. Pacing is trained separately, with a stopwatch, once accuracy is stable.

Mock-test review

A mock test is only useful if it is read properly. Every mock is reviewed question by question, and the error log is updated before the next plan is set.
